The Starrett Story

Precision Engineering Since 1880

Laroy S. Starrett founded the L.S. Starrett Company in Athol, Massachusetts in 1880, after inventing and patenting the combination square. From that single innovation, Starrett has grown into a global leader in precision measuring tools, hole saws and saw blades, manufacturing over 5,000 product variations for industrial, professional and consumer markets worldwide.

Today, Starrett manufactures across eight locations worldwide, including a facility in Scotland serving European and Asian markets. From bi-metal and carbide-tipped hole saws to micrometers, calipers and band saw blades, Starrett remains the benchmark for accuracy and durability in precision cutting and measurement. Every tool is built to deliver repeatable accuracy in the most demanding trade and industrial environments.

Starrett FAQs

Common questions about Starrett hole saws, measuring tools and saw blades

Are Starrett hole saws compatible with other brands' arbors?

Starrett hole saws use a standard arbor fitting system. Most Starrett hole saws from 14mm to 210mm fit their A1 and A2 arbor range, which includes a quick-release mechanism for fast blade changes. While some third-party arbors may physically fit, we recommend using genuine Starrett arbors for optimal performance and concentricity.

What is the difference between bi-metal and carbide tipped hole saws?

Bi-metal hole saws use high-speed steel teeth welded to a spring steel body — ideal for cutting mild steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminium and wood. Carbide tipped hole saws use tungsten carbide teeth for cutting abrasive and difficult materials like nail-embedded wood, fibreglass, reinforced concrete and cast iron. Carbide tipped saws last significantly longer on abrasive materials but cost more upfront.

How should I calibrate Starrett measuring tools?

Starrett precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers are factory-calibrated to exacting standards. For ongoing accuracy, zero-check your tools before each use with gauge blocks or reference standards. For formal calibration to traceable standards, contact an accredited calibration laboratory. Starrett also offers calibration services through their authorised network.

Do you offer trade pricing on Starrett?

Yes. We offer competitive trade pricing across the full Starrett range including hole saws, measuring tools and saw blades. Contact our trade team on 01843 593 440 or email sales@invictatools.co.uk for volume discounts and trade account enquiries. We also provide free next-day delivery on all orders over £99.

Which Starrett hole saw do I need for plumbing work?

For plumbing and HVAC work, the Starrett Fast Cut bi-metal range is the most popular choice. It cuts cleanly through copper, mild steel and plastic pipe. For cutting through walls where you may hit nails or mixed materials, step up to the carbide tipped multi-purpose range. Starrett also offer plumber-specific hole saw kits with the most common diameters.

Where are Starrett tools manufactured?

Starrett tools are manufactured across eight facilities worldwide, including five in the United States (headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts), one in Scotland (serving European and Asian markets since 1958), and facilities in Brazil and China. The Scottish facility means UK customers benefit from locally manufactured products with shorter lead times.
