The Spit Story

Fixing Into Concrete & Steel Since 1949

Spit was founded in France in 1949, pioneering a unique system for fixing directly into concrete and steel — now known as powder-actuated tool (PAT) technology. From that single innovation, Spit grew into Europe's leading specialist in direct fastening, mechanical anchoring and chemical fixing systems for the construction industry.

Acquired by Illinois Tool Works (ITW) in 1986, Spit now sits within the ITW Construction Products division alongside Paslode. With over 75 years of specialist experience, Spit's range covers everything from the Pulsa gas nailer system and Tapcon concrete screws to ETA-approved heavy-duty anchors and fire-rated fixings — engineered solutions for professionals who fix into concrete and steel every day.

Spit FAQs

Common questions about Spit direct fastening tools, anchors and fixings

What is the difference between powder-actuated and gas-actuated fixing tools?

Powder-actuated tools (PAT) use a blank cartridge to fire a pin into concrete or steel — they are powerful and suited to heavy-duty structural fixings. Gas-actuated tools like the Spit Pulsa use a gas fuel cell and battery ignition for lighter, faster operation — ideal for high-volume MEP fixings such as cable trays, conduit clips and pipe brackets.

What type of anchor should I use for concrete?

It depends on the load and substrate condition. For light to medium loads, Tapcon self-tapping concrete screws are the fastest option — no plugs required. For heavy structural loads, use mechanical expansion anchors or chemical resin anchors. For cracked concrete or seismic zones, specify ETA Option 1 approved anchors. Always check the design load tables.

What are fire-rated fixings and when do I need them?

Fire-rated fixings are anchors and fasteners tested to maintain structural integrity during a fire for a specified period (typically 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes). They are required wherever fixings penetrate or support fire compartmentation — fire barriers, fire-stopping around service penetrations, and structural connections in fire-rated zones. Spit's Tapcon HFL and anchor range includes fire-rated options.

What does ETA approval mean for construction fixings?

ETA (European Technical Assessment) is an independently verified performance certificate for construction products. An ETA-approved anchor has been tested under controlled conditions for pullout resistance, shear capacity, cracked concrete performance and fire rating. It is required for structural and safety-critical fixings and allows engineers to specify with confidence.

Can I use the Spit Pulsa on steel as well as concrete?

Yes. The Spit Pulsa 800E is designed for fixing into both concrete and steel substrates. Use the correct pin type for each substrate — HC6 pins for concrete and steel-specific pins for metal decking and steel framing. Always check the maximum steel thickness in the technical data for your chosen pin.

Do you offer trade pricing on Spit products?
