The Gorilla Story

Incredibly Strong Since 1994

The Gorilla Glue Company was born in 1994 when founder Mark Singer discovered a polyurethane adhesive being used to bond teak furniture during a trip to Indonesia. Recognising its extraordinary strength, he brought the formula back to Cincinnati, Ohio, and launched Original Gorilla Glue to the North American market in 1999. The water-activated polyurethane formula that expands into materials to create an incredibly strong bond quickly became a phenomenon.

Today, the Gorilla range extends well beyond the original glue. Gorilla Super Glue, Gorilla Wood Glue, Gorilla Epoxy, Gorilla Tape and Gorilla Construction Adhesive give tradespeople and professionals a complete bonding solution for virtually any material. What is the difference between Original Gorilla Glue and Gorilla Super Glue?

Original Gorilla Glue is a polyurethane adhesive that requires moisture to activate, expands as it cures and creates an incredibly strong bond on porous materials like wood, stone and ceramic. It takes 1-2 hours to clamp and 24 hours to fully cure. Gorilla Super Glue is a cyanoacrylate adhesive that bonds in seconds without clamping, making it ideal for quick repairs on non-porous surfaces like metal, plastic and rubber. Choose Original for structural bonding and Super Glue for fast fixes.

Is Gorilla Glue really waterproof?

Yes. Original Gorilla Glue is 100% waterproof and will not break down when exposed to water, rain or moisture. This makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Gorilla Wood Glue also offers water resistance (Type II rating). For tape applications, Gorilla All Weather Tape and Waterproof Patch & Seal Tape are specifically formulated for wet conditions and prolonged outdoor exposure.

Why does Original Gorilla Glue expand and how do I manage it?

Original Gorilla Glue is a polyurethane adhesive that reacts with moisture to cure. As it cures, it expands approximately 3 times its original volume, filling gaps and penetrating into porous materials for a stronger bond. To manage expansion: use a thin, even layer (a little goes a long way), dampen one surface before applying, and clamp for 1-2 hours. Wipe away any squeeze-out with a dry cloth before it cures.

What materials does Gorilla Glue work on?

Original Gorilla Glue bonds wood, stone, metal, ceramic, foam, glass, brick, porcelain and most plastics. It works best on porous and semi-porous surfaces. Gorilla Super Glue is better suited for non-porous materials like metal, rubber and hard plastics. Gorilla Epoxy offers the widest material compatibility for heavy-duty repairs. Note: polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) plastics are difficult to bond with any adhesive.

How strong is Gorilla Tape compared to standard duct tape?

Gorilla Tape features a reinforced double-thick backing and a more aggressive adhesive than standard duct tape. It bonds to rough, uneven and irregular surfaces where ordinary tape fails. The weatherproof formulation resists moisture, UV and temperature extremes. For critical applications in wet conditions, Gorilla All Weather Extreme Tape provides even greater outdoor durability.
